Samui Geography
Koh Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand, about 300 miles south of the capital city, Bangkok. It forms part of the Mu Koh Samui Archipelago, a series of small islands.
Koh Samui is no more than 15 miles across at its most extreme points, though it is still the third-largest island in the Kingdom of Thailand. It is surrounded by more than 60 smaller islands which, taken together, form the Ang Thong Marine National Park.
The island of Koh Samui is plush with white sandy beaches, small desert bays and rice and coconut plantations. The central area of the island is covered with tropical rainforest and is uninhabitable. Within the trees is also the highest mountain, Khao Pom, which is 635 meters high.
The hotels hide among the coconut trees nearer the perimeter of the island. These various lowland and coastal areas are connected by a single road which roughly encircles the island. There can also be found a few rivers and waterfalls, and even a few original springs.

Weather in Samui
LIke much of Thailand, Koh Samui has a tropical climate and the temperature is very hot. The year-round average is 28 – 34 degrees Celsius.
The island does not experience the southwest monsoon-like most of the rest of Thailand, so there is a greater period of drier and cooler weather than other places such as Phuket and Khao Lak on the Andaman coast.
So between May and September is an ideal time to visit as the weather will be warmer and less humid. Instead, Koh Samui has its own rainy season between October and December. The weather in this season is warm and wet and very humid.
The driest months are in February and March, while the wettest month is October. These are also the months with the highest (October) and lowest (February) levels of humidity.
Local Guide: Samui
The most famous of Koh Samui’s attractions is the big Buddha temple.
The beautiful sculpture is situated just off the corner of Koh Samui on a tiny island that is connected by a causeway. At 12 meters tall and covered in gold, it truly is a marvel. It shows Buddha resisting temptation in the Mara position.
On this idyllic island, however, it is essential that you take in the wonderful scenery of nature.
Namuang waterfall is just one place to take in. There are actually two waterfalls, Na Muang 1 and Na Muang 2, and the first fall into a small pool that you can swim in, while the second gathers about 30 minutes uphill.
There are so many other things to do while exploring this small island.
● A jungle safari tour
● The secret Buddha garden
● Angthong marine park
● Diving in the stunning waters
● The temple of Wat Plai Laem
These are just a few of them. And not to forget the Thai-style Oktoberfest which was introduced in 2004 and features bratwurst and beer and lederhosen. Plus all the profits go back into the community to help build local schools and other causes.
