Pattaya Geography
Pattaya is located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, within the province of Chonburi, about 100 miles southeast of Bangkok – a mere two hour drive.
It is a picturesque beach resort, only about 80 square miles, with a 10 mile long scenic coastline of soft, white sand. The town is famous for its many beautiful beaches and its nightlife.
The town itself is very mountainous, especially in the south and plain of the coast. The eastern region slopes downwards into the western region. ‘Greater Pattaya’ encompasses most of the beaches and is divided into separate districts, each with its own beachfront.
The main beach (Pattaya beach) is found in the northern section along with Naklua beach and Phra Tamnak Hill (also known as ‘Buddha hill’ for the temples that sit atop it). The main sweep of the bay area is divided into two principal beachfronts – Pattaya beach (north) and Pattaya Tai (south).
There are many offshore islands that orbit Pattaya, categorized as ‘near’ and ‘far’ and ‘Coral’ islands.
Flights to Pattaya
There is no major airport in Pattaya. Instead it is served by Bangkok’s international airport – Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), which is about 100 miles away. The main airport for Pattaya is the Utapao Rayong Pattaya International Airport (UTP), one of the world’s newest airports.
For now, however, most flights to Pattaya require two stops, because so few flights are available directly to Bangkok as it is.
● From the UK, London’s Heathrow (LHR) and Gatwick (LGT) offer the most frequent flights, with departures daily and an average flight time of 18 hours and 35 minutes.
Connections on these flights are usually in SIngapore, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur, and then a second flight from Bangkok (BKK) airport. Other UK departure destinations are Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. The only difference between these and London is the frequency of flights, though Manchester airport offers regular flights to Thailand.
● From Europe you can fly from Paris and Frankfurt. Frankfurt (FRA) offers one-stop (Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)) flights to Pattaya. The flight duration is anywhere between 23 hours and 1 day and 7 hours.
● Flights from the United States are best taken from the east and west coasts. New York (JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia), Los Angeles (LAX), and San Francisco (SFO) international airports offer the most frequent flights and the shortest duration, again at over 1 day of traveling and two stops. Houston (IAH) and Chicago (ORD) airports also offer flights to Pattaya.
Pattaya is served by a bus service from Bangkok’s Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) and Eastern Terminal (Ekamai). There is also a daily rail service on the eastern line of the state railway between Pattaya and Hualumphong Station in Bangkok.
Weather in Pattaya
Like much of the rest of Thailand, Pattaya has a tropical wet and dry climate, which is divided into seasons.
It is hot year-round, with the average temperature never dropping below 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit). The dry season runs roughly from December to February. During this time the air is very dry and there is little precipitation, and it is less humid – though still over 60 per cent on average.
There is lots of sunshine in this season. These are the best times to visit as a tourist, as not only is there less rain and more sun but the cooler air also brings a refreshing breeze with it.
There is a transitional period between the seasons. This is in April and March and it brings with it the most sunshine and the most humidity.
The rainy season is caused by the southwest monsoon, and runs from May to November. During these months it will rain almost every day, usually heavily in the afternoon and evening, and thunderstorms and hurricanes are common.
Towards the end of the southeast monsoon season, in roughly October and November, the amount of rainfall is at its greatest.
